Gonorrhea

A gonorrhea test detects gonorrhea, a bacterial infection that can spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex.

How it spreads

These bacterial infections spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex with an infected person. Sharing infected sex toys can also be a risk factor.

May cause no symptoms, but can include burning during urination, unusual discharge, and pelvic pain in women. Men experience painful urination and discharge from the penis.

Treated with antibiotics, but some strains are becoming resistant.

Gardnerella

Gardnerella, specifically Gardnerella vaginalis, is a type of bacteria that can be found naturally in the vagina. It’s part of the vaginal microbiome, a complex ecosystem of various bacteria that helps maintain a healthy vaginal environment.

How it spreads
Gardnerella itself isn’t considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI). While sexual activity can influence the vaginal microbiome, Gardnerella is already present in many women. An overgrowth is what can lead to issues.

While Gardnerella is normally harmless, an overgrowth can disrupt the vaginal balance and contribute to bacterial vaginosis (BV). Symptoms of BV may include:

  • Thin, gray or white vaginal discharge with a fishy odor, especially after sex
  • Itching or burning sensation in the vagina
  • Discomfort during urination (less common)

If you experience these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a simple test to diagnose BV and prescribe antibiotics to restore the balance in your vagina. These antibiotics typically target the overgrowth of Gardnerella and other bacteria associated with BV.

Chlamydia

A chlamydia test detects chlamydia, a common sexually transmitted bacterial infection.

How it spreads

These bacterial infections spread through vaginal, oral, or anal sex with an infected person. Sharing infected sex toys can also be a risk factor.

Often shows no symptoms, but can cause burning during urination, unusual vaginal discharge, and pelvic pain in women. Men may experience similar symptoms, with the addition of discharge from the penis.

Easily cured with antibiotics.

HIV

HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 cells (T cells), which help the immune system fight off infections.

How it spreads

It is primarily spread through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles, or from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding.

Early signs can include flu-like symptoms, but many people have no symptoms initially. If untreated, it can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

Early signs can include flu-like symptoms, but many people have no symptoms initially. If untreated, it can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Today 60% of people do not know their status.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is more common, treatable STD that is more common in women than men. 70% of people who have trichomoniasis will not display symptoms.

How it spreads

Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It spreads through vaginal, oral, or anal sex with someone who already has the infection. Sharing sex toys that haven’t been properly cleaned after use by an infected person can also be a risk factor.

Many people with trichomoniasis don’t experience any symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they can develop within a few days to a month after exposure. Here’s what to watch out for:

Abnormal vaginal discharge: This can be thin, frothy, and yellow-green or gray in color with a fishy odor.
Genital irritation: Itching, redness, and soreness around the vagina and vulva are common.
Pain during urination or sex: You may experience a burning sensation when you pee or have sex.
Discomfort in the lower abdomen: A dull ache or pressure in the pelvic area can occur.

Trichomoniasis is easily treated with antibiotics. Here’s what you can expect:

Diagnosis: Your doctor will likely perform a pelvic exam and collect a sample of your vaginal discharge for testing.
Medication: Doctors typically prescribe a single dose of metronidazole (Flagyl) or tinidazole (Tindamax).
Partner Treatment: It’s crucial for all sexual partners to be treated at the same time to prevent re-infection.
Abstaining from sex: Until you and your partner(s) complete treatment and are symptom-free, avoid sexual contact to prevent spreading the infection.

Herpes

A common sexually transmitted bacterial infection.

How it spreads

This viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV) spreads through skin-to-skin contact with someone who has an active outbreak (sores). This can include kissing, oral sex, or genital contact. It’s also possible to spread herpes from an infected person to a newborn baby during childbirth.

Causes outbreaks with blisters or sores around the genitals, burning or tingling sensation, and pain when urinating.

No cure, but medication can manage outbreaks and reduce transmission risk.

Syphilis

A syphilis test detects syphilis, a bacterial infection that can cause serious health problems if left untreated.

How it spreads

This bacterial infection spreads through direct contact with syphilis sores during vaginal, oral, or anal sex. It can also be transmitted from a mother to her baby during pregnancy or childbirth.

Progresses through stages with varying symptoms, including painless sores, rash, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, it can damage internal organs.

Treated with antibiotics, but early detection is crucial.
